Being a student doesn't mean you have to spend loads of money to have a good time. Whether you want to go out with friends, explore somewhere new or update your wardrobe, there are plenty of ways to enjoy yourself without constantly worrying about your bank balance.
1. Have a Night Out on a Budget
Going on a night out can quickly become expensive, especially when you add up food, drinks, taxis and entry fees.
One way to save money is to look for student nights and events with cheaper entry. It is also worth checking ticket prices before going and deciding how much you can afford to spend. For example The Limelight at Belfast have student nights on weekdays with £4.50 doubles and capped £5 entry fee!
Getting ready with friends can also make the night more fun without costing much. Put some music on, get ready together, take photos and also pre drink before heading out to save even more.
Most importantly, set yourself a spending limit. You don't need to buy every drink or round to have a good night.
2. Find Cheap Things to Do at the Weekend
You don't need to spend £50 every weekend to have something to do.
A movie night with friends, a picnic, going for a walk or exploring somewhere new can all be inexpensive ways to spend your weekend.
You could also look for free museums, galleries, parks, markets and local events. You might be surprised by how many things are available without an entry fee.
3. Look Good Without Spending Loads
Before buying something new, have a look through your existing wardrobe. You might have clothes that you have barely worn or outfits you could style differently with accessories and jewellery.
When you do want something new, try second-hand shops and resale apps such as Vinted or Depop. You can often find good-quality clothes for much less than buying them brand new.
It's also worth looking for student discounts when shopping for clothes. Even a small discount can help you stay within your budget.
Instead of constantly buying new outfits, focus on finding pieces that you can wear in lots of different ways such as colours like black and white.
5. Make Some Extra Money
Sometimes saving money isn't enough, and having a little extra income can make student life much easier.
A part-time job can be a good option if you have time alongside your studies. Retail, hospitality and other flexible jobs can often work around university timetables.
You could also sell clothes, books, electronics or other things you no longer use. This can give you some extra money while also clearing out your room.
